This year the focus is on raising awareness of weight stigma
Every year, the World Obesity Federation organises World Obesity Day on 11th October. This year the focus is on raising awareness about the prevalence, severity and diversity of weight stigma in society and in the media. Weight stigma refers to negative behaviours and attitudes that are directed towards individuals solely because of their weight. Society is turning away from stigmatising language and imagery in many areas. It is time for us to address the damaging effects of weight stigma and instead portray obesity in a fair, accurate and informative manner.
